Hi! My name is Justin Bixler, and I have been the band director at Independence since the 2013-2014 school year. During my tenure , the band has consistently received superior ratings at state marching evaluation and excellent ratings at state concert evaluation. We have even traveled to Interstate events and competed at Music in the Parks and the Smoky Mountain Music Festival.
I believe that music is for everyone! We start our band program in 6th grade at East Tate, and the kids transition into the Middle School Band and then ultimately into the High School Band. We have two concerts per year, the Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert, where all three bands perform. The High School Band also attends all of the varsity football games. On top of that, we play at about three different marching festivals in the Fall and a concert festival in the Spring. The High School Band also performs at graduation every year.
I also teach 5th grade music, where kids learn the fundamentals of music and play games related to rhythm and melody.
Students in the 6th-12th grade in band have an account with Music First for practice and other educational music studies.
